How to Lubricate Your Aluminess Swing-Out Rear Bumper Arm

🔧 How to Lubricate Your Aluminess Swing-Out Rear Bumper Arm

Regular lubrication of your swing-out bumper arm helps ensure smooth operation and extends the life of the hinge and latch components. Follow these simple steps to keep your Aluminess swing arm moving freely and reliably.

🧰 What You’ll Need:

  • High-quality lithium grease or synthetic waterproof grease
  • Rag or shop towel
  • WD-40 (optional for initial cleaning)
  • Nitrile gloves (optional)

✅ Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Open the Swing Arm

  • Fully swing out the arm to its open position. This relieves tension and allows easier access to the hinge point and latch.

2. Inspect for Dirt or Debris

  • Use a rag to wipe away any dirt, dust, or dried grease around the hinge and latch. If buildup is excessive, a light spray of WD-40 can help break it down.
  • Be sure to wipe it dry before applying new grease.

3. Locate the Grease Points

  • Most Aluminess swing arms use a grease fitting (Zerk fitting) at the pivot point.
  • If no Zerk fitting is present, apply grease directly to the hinge bolt or pivot shaft area.

4. Apply Grease

  • With a grease gun: Connect the nozzle to the Zerk fitting and pump until you see old grease begin to push out.
  • Without a grease gun: Manually apply a generous amount of grease around the pivot area, working it into the joint as much as possible. Move the arm back and forth to help it distribute.

5. Lubricate the Latch and Catch

  • Apply a small amount of grease to the locking latch pin, catch plate, and any moving parts in the latching mechanism. This prevents squeaks and wear.

6. Cycle the Arm

  • Swing the arm open and closed several times to distribute the lubricant evenly. Wipe off any excess grease that squeezes out.

🗓 Maintenance Tip:

Lubricate your swing-out arm every 3–6 months, or after heavy off-road use, rain, or snow exposure. This prevents rust, squeaks, and premature wear.
